Cosplay Contest

Ready to wow the spectators and judges!? Prepare the craft foam and dust off your sewing machines, and come see your favourite characters come to life on stage! The AnIrevo Cosplay Contest is a competition showcase of the hard work and passion of our amazing cosplayers. From costume construction to Cosplay Skit performance, the Cosplay Contest is open to Cosplayers who have various levels of experience. Remember this isn’t a popularity contest . No matter what the skill level, you can show off your cosplay on Anirevo’s main stage in our biggest event. Just note You may choose to sign up for Craftsmanship (Novice, Journeyman or Master Crafter) “Walk-on,” or Cosplay Skit.

Anime Revolution Rules and Guidelines

Must have an 2025 AR Pass. We cannot guarantee the time of the contest so contestants MUST be available for all three days.
Must read and agree to all Cosplay Contest rules.
Consent to allow AR to use all images for promotional purposes in any media form.
Adhere to AR Rules and Regulations, especially those pertaining to Appearance, Costumes, Cosplays and Props.
Complete all responsibilities and previous obligations, if you are an AR Staff and/or volunteer.
This is a PG-13 rated event. Any Walk-On, Skit or dance routine performance that displays excessive cursing, inappropriate material and sexual content will be disqualified and all persons will be asked to leave the stage.
No confetti, liquids, items or materials that can ruin and/or harm the stage and other participants. Any extra material being used has to be approved.
Upon leaving the stage, all objects, props and items must come off with you.
If people wish to go on stage as a group, all members must fill out their own entry forms, and indicate they are part of a specific group.
Groups of 6 or more will require additional approval.
Audio submissions must be in an MP3 format.
Absolutely NO "Mic-Drops" permitted.

Craftsmanship / Walk-On Rules:

Costumes and props must be handmade by the participant or by non-professional family members and/or friends. “Found item” cosplays are allowed, but must be extensively modified. The goal is to have around 75% of the entire costume made by the contestant.
- i) If in the event of a group setting where there is one tailor/seamstress who makes the costumes for the entire group, that person will be considered for the craftsmanship award. The group members can model the costume(s), but as this award is directed more towards the creation of the costumes themselves, only those who actually significantly helped with the costume manufacturing, shall be considered.
Contestants wanting to have their costumes judged Must attend the pre-judging allotted time prior to the stage production portion of the contest. This will occur in a panel room and not the Main Events Hall.
- i) In the event of a group setting, this means ALL members modelling the costumes for consideration must attend.
Contestants must still arrive at main events an hour prior to the start of the cosplay contest for set up.
Walk-On time limit on stage is 45 seconds per contestant.

Cosplay Skit Rules:

Cosplay skit entrants, who just want to perform and are NOT wanting their costumes considered for the craftsmanship award, DO NOT have to attend the pre-judging segment; however, you must still arrive at main events an hour prior to the start of the cosplay contest for set up.
A description of the skit must be provided in advance to the cosplay coordinator.
Your cosplay skit must not harm the audience, other participants nor yourself. All skits will be reviewed; if your skit is deemed too dangerous then it will not be approved.
Skits should be pre-recorded. If there is a live singing element to your skit, please inform the cosplay coordinator ahead of time to see if we can make arrangements for a microphone. The majority of the skit should be pre-recorded and rehearsed to ensure time restraints are met.
Skit maximum time limit is 5 minutes max unless discussed with the coordinator.
Entire audio must be played; there will be no fast forwarding;

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Accuracy (40 pts) – How true has the contestant been to the character reference? A Reference sheet must be provided for the judges during pre-judging please.

Quality (40 pts) – How the cosplay fits, how well it has been made, clean sewing/painting/etc. skills, and props.

Technique (20 pts) – The more different skills are applied to a cosplay is acknowledged and judged upon in this category.

You will be privately evaluated by a panel of judges on the following criteria:

- Quality, Accuracy, Technique

- Stage presence is encouraged but not required

Remember this isn’t a popularity contest - enjoy yourselves! No matter what the skill level, you can show off your cosplay to a panel of seasoned judges and winners will be announced on Anirevo’s main stage in our Cosplay Masquerade event.

Costumes should be PG-13 rated.
Only solo and duo (group of 2 persons) are allowed (one prize per entry).
A Cosplay Build Book would be beneficial (but not required) (via a shareable link) - i.e. a character reference photo, work-in-progress photos, etc.

Craftsmanship / Character Performance Rules:

Costumes and props must be handmade by the participant or by non-professional family members and/or friends. The goal is to have around 75% of the entire costume made by the contestant and only the contestant, upon winning, is eligible to receive the prize (Note: in the case of Modeling and contestant is not the creator of the cosplay, kindly contact AR).
Contestants will attend a pre-judging allotted time slot (~5 min) ready in-costume in a private room communicated closer to the convention.
Must be able to maneuver in their costume without difficulty (as-is reasonable) and/or the aid of another.
Selected winners will be announced and have the opportunity to showcase their winning costume at the Cosplay Masquerade event (if one has not already signed up for this event).

Misrepresented skill level may result in exclusion from the contest (refer to Judging criterion for skill level).

Entries are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and after review from our staff. We will do our best to accommodate given our scheduling but inclusion is not guaranteed.

Dependent on the number of submissions; participants are sorted and prizes are determined for each Skill Level group.

Novice: You are new to contests or haven't won any cosplay awards.

Journeymen/Craftsperson: You have been in several competitions and won some smaller awards.

Master: You have won titles in a few competitions (i.e. Best-In-Show, Best Journeyman, etc).

The following criteria will be used during the judging process:

Cosplay Contest Walk-On

Want to showcase all of your hard work and walk the stage without having a formal judging? Then the Cosplay Masquerade is the perfect event for you! Get up on our main stage to show off or just strut your stuff. This event is all about having fun and just getting used to being on stage. Anyone is welcome and everyone who feels comfortable getting on stage is encouraged to apply.

Winners of the Anirevo Cosplay Contest will also have an opportunity for a final walk on stage - so be sure to come out and show your support for those who love cosplay!

AMV CONTEST

It’s time for the AMV contest again!
Unleash your creativity and skills with video editing programs to create the best anime music video of the year and impress the audience!

All entries must list the anime used at the end of their AMVs. We’ve had massive requests from audiences to show what anime are in these AMVs.
Entries must be a minimum of 1 minute and a maximum of 6 minutes. Keep in mind that we do pre-screen entries for quality.
Up to 2 entries per team OR person. Multiple entries are allowed (max 2). Please fill up one submission form per entry.
By submitting your video(s), you agree to let us play, copy, and use it to promote the event. Requests for removal will be put into consideration and handled on a case by case basis.
Most of your video must be anime/video game footage. This is an anime convention. Use your best judgement.
Most of your audio must be music. There is no arbitrary magic number for the amount of music. Some narration/dialog is fine. Use your best judgement.
NSFW content should be limited.
The screening is open to the general public. Entries with excessive offensive language, nudity, and/or violence might not be accepted. We accept entries with some NSFW content, but keep it reasonable. Use your best judgement.
Please do not include intros or outros that are more than 20 seconds long. It is fine to integrate credits into the AMV itself.
If your entries have won 1st place/Best in Show at any other conventions before 5th August 2016, it will not be accepted. This is to give everybody a fair chance. This rule only applies to those who won 1st place/Best in Show. 2nd+/runner-up is fine.
All winning AMVs will be available on Anime Revolution’s YouTube account within 3 weeks post-convention. Winning participants can request to have the posting of their submission delayed for up to 2 months. Basically, if you don’t want it posted yet for whatever reason, just let us know.
All submissions must be labelled in the following format: (AMVtitle)_Nickname_FirstnameLastname_email
[eg: (Pure)_Zerothic_YuiHirasawa_Yui123 @ example.com ]
If the submissions are not labelled in the format above, the submission will be automatically disqualified.

Breaking any of these would likely disqualify your entry. This WILL be enforced more strictly for this year’s contest.

Don’t use content from streaming sites like YouTube/Crunchyroll/etc.
No subtitles, watermark, or logos on the entry that was not added by you. Broadcast watermarks are fine. We’ll arrange to let you watermark your own entry before it gets posted online.
Use the proper aspect ratio. Artistic license aside, there is often only one main choice for this. Use your best judgement.
No interlaced footage in the entry. Progressive please.

Accepted File Formats & Codecs

You will have a chance to resubmit if it’s not in an accepted format. Quality is not guaranteed if we fix it for you. Please avoid 10bit entries for now.
Video:
This is to avoid having to deal with playback issues on exotic format. This is not difficult to correct but it is unnecessary work.

H.264/AVC (.mp4 container, this is the preferred format)
MPEG2 (.mpg container)
MPEG transport stream (.TS container)
AVIs are fine, but H264 AVIs are automatically rejected; no exceptions

Audio:
This is flexible as long as audio quality is not severely degraded.

Resolution:
This is flexible as long as the aspect ratio is correct. Here are some suggestions:

640×480
720×480
1280×720
1440×1080
1920×1080

Frame Rate:
This is to minimize playback issues.
Either 23.976fps (24fps) or 29.97fps (30fps)

Playback
The equipment is not finalized yet. It is difficult to know what the playback resolution will be or what is even available. This likely won’t be finalized until after the contest entry period ends.

Submissions are judged by the audience during screening.

Anirevo Opening Ceremonies Video
One AMV will be selected to be our opening ceremonies video. It will be chosen by Anirevo Staff. This AMV can showcase previous Anirevo footage and anime. Wow us with what you’ve got!

Judging

Best Editing:
This will be decided by our internal jury panel. The video stands out as an excellent example of video editing. Things to watch for would be well timed choreography between the video and music (IE: Keyframes in the video should sync to the music, transitions should be flawless), and altering and re-purposing footage from the source anime. (IE: did the video creator alter the source footage to make a new scene.)

Most Impactful:
This will be decided by the audience.
I’m not sure what I just saw, but my sides still hurt from laughing, OR quite the opposite! I cried, it was so sad…

The People’s Choice:
This will be decided by the audience.
The music selection mixes well with the Anime’s style and theme. This video is clearly the crowd favourite overall.

All winning videos will be played during the Closing Ceremonies, interspersed throughout the event.

Winning AMVs are showcased at the Anirevo Opening (of next year) and Closing Ceremonies (of the current year).

AMV Rules and Regulations

Entries must be a min. of 1 minute and a max. of 6 minutes.

This is the chance for Idol groups to perform on Anirevo’s Main Stage.

All members of the group must have an AR 3-day Pass 2025; We cannot guarantee the time of the event so members MUST be available for all three days.

Consent to allow AR to use all images for promotional purposes in any media form.
Adhere to AR Rules and Regulations, especially those pertaining to Appearance, Costumes, Cosplays and Props.

Showcase Rules and Guidelines

Please choose 6 songs your group would like to perform. The Anirevo Staff will be creating a set list based on everyone’s picks. Please note that this is to prevent repeated songs and to ensure the set list is set well ahead of time. It will be up to the AniRevo staff which songs will be in the showcase, we cannot guarantee everyone will get their top choices but we will do our best. Groups will be informed of the set list by July 7th changes will not be accepted after July 14th. NO EXCEPTIONS
All group members must have a valid badge to enter the competition.
Performance must be kept PG13 (costume, music, content).
No use of flames, explosives, water, or other props that may be a hazard.
A final copy of the music for the competition must be received by AR Events by July 15th; please label the music by this system #_IdolGroupName_20xx(x=conveniton year). Example: 01_KiraKira_2025
Fan Favourite group will perform for 15 minutes at Anirevo Closing Ceremonies and will be chosen by our audience tally.

Failure to comply with the rules will result in disqualification.

Please submit 6 songs your group would like to perform and your preferred priority. (ie. Song 1 is top preferred vs Song 6)
AR will then select 3 of the 6 to create set lists based on group submissions and priority to the best of our ability. This is to prevent repeated songs and to ensure the set list is set in advance.
Groups will be informed for their planned attendance and set list approximately 6 weeks before the event.
Groups must arrive 1 hour prior ready in-costume to the start of the Idol Showcase for check-in and sound check.
Idols must be able to maneuver in their costume(s) without difficulty (as-is reasonable for a stage) and without the aid of another.
Fan Favourite group will be chosen by audience and win a performance timeslot at Anirevo's Closing Ceremony. Winners may select 1 of their 3 performed songs.

Failure to comply with the rules will result in removal from the Idol Showcase.

Entries must be submitted via email by: June 21, 2025 at 11:59PM.
All entries must integrate at least 1 of these key themes: Vancouver, Canada, Galaxy, Summer, or Time Travel.
Must be Photoshop .psd transparent file.
Minimum file size is 8.5” x 11” (A4 letter size) at 300dpi.
Senmei must be full-body and coloured - on her own layer.

a.You can submit a cropped version with a fully drawn background (separate layer) as long as the .psd contains the full-body version.

Alteration of Senmei’s outfit is allowed, if on theme
- a.Some alteration of Senmei’s hair is also allowed, but should be tied only on the right side
Maximum 1 entry per artist.
Do not use a watermark on your entries.

The contest will consist of 2 rounds:

Round 1: Jury selection will consist of Anirevo staff and they will use the following criteria: Creativity, Technical Execution, and Vision.

Round 2: Entries selected to continue into Round 2 will be posted on our socials for the public voting period of June 28, 12:00am - July 4, 11:59pm.

Anime Speedtune

Anime Speedtune has been the gold standard of anisong game shows since 2013, and is proudly making its west coast debut at Anirevo! Players take turns choosing topics, and must identify anime shows from music. With multiple difficulty levels, both newcomers and seasoned viewers will feel comfortable. Speedtune is fast and furious, but it’s also informative, as the audience learns a bit about every featured show. Please note that all players are selected at the qualifier event.

Rules

There may be a qualifier before the main event to select players. Otherwise, players will be selected at the main event. Check your convention schedule.

Players take turns choosing a topic. All players signal with buzzers.
5 tunes per topic, 25 seconds per tune, 1 attempt per tune.
After signaling, guess the show title, which may be in English or Japanese.
A correct guess is scored based on the difficulty (+2 to +6 points), plus any bonuses.
There is no penalty for an incorrect guess.
The game ends after everyone has chosen a topic. A full 6-player game typically takes 20-25 minutes to complete.

CHOOSER BONUS: +2 points for each tune the chooser scores.

MEDLEY: Topics with a 2-digit number in a circle are medleys.

A medley contains 5 video clips that are played consecutively.
Buzzers aren’t used. Instead, players write down all guesses on a tablet.
Any repeated guesses are invalid. The timer appears when 10 seconds remain.
The first medley digit indicates the minimum scored clips for the chooser. If the chooser fails, the chooser gets a penalty of -8 points.
The second medley digit indicates the minimum scored clips for the nonchoosers. Those who fail get a penalty of -4 points.

BERSERK MODE: After a topic is chosen, any player may activate berserk mode, but only once per game. What it does depends on the topic type:

REGULAR TOPICS: Berserked players get double points, but may signal only within the first 3 seconds. An incorrect guess locks the player for the remainder of the topic. Special bonuses are not doubled.
MEDLEYS: Berserked players must “ace” the topic, scoring 5 out of 5. Those who succeed get +12 points. Those who fail get a penalty of -12 points, which replaces the regular penalty.
If the chooser activates berserk mode, the chooser bonus is disabled.
